Be Prepared for OASIS-C

Question: I understand that the final draft for OASIS C is expected to be released by CMS in the late summer with implementation set for January 2010. When should our agency begin preparing for the changes?

Answer: This is a great question and one that is most likely in the back of every agency's mind. The "almost final" draft was posted on March 9, 2009 for public comment. This new OASIS data collection tool is dramatically different from our current OASIS B-1, including new proposed process items for fall risk, depression, heart failure, and diabetic foot care. As with anything new, preparation needs to begin well ahead to ensure success. Just as you wouldn't start studying for an important final exam the night before, waiting to begin your OASIS C training until "later" will only prove problematic.

The time to start preparing for the new OASIS C is now. It may seem like January is a ways off, but considering employee vacation schedules, holidays, etc., the changes are really just around the corner. You may want to consider developing an OASIS C timeline that includes targets for completion leading up to January 2010. Begin thinking of processes, procedures, and support structures now. Taking something that seems like a very large challenge and breaking it down into specific deadlines and targets can really help an agency get through the process as smoothly as possible. Also, think about assigning "OASIS C-hampions" to help lead staff through the transitions in a positive way.
